Programme director: Rally targets 'traitors', not other races

This Saturday's rally against the International Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (Icerd) is not aimed at other races, said its programme director Kamaruzaman Mohamad.
“The gathering is not about racism, it is not about taking away other people's rights. The gathering is to send a message to a handful of people who are attempting to defile the Federal Constitution.
“The gathering is not aimed at the Chinese or other races, but at traitors of the nation,” he told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
Kamaruzaman clarified that the gathering in Kuala Lumpur is to uphold and defend what is enshrined in the constitution, which binds the people of various races in Malaysia.
He also stressed that the gathering is not related to last week riots over the location of a Hindu temple in Subang Jaya.
Explaining what is in store, Kamaruzaman said the gathering would commence at 2pm and participants would congregate at three locations, Masjid Jamek, Masjid Negara and the entrance of the Sogo shopping mall.
From these three locations, the participants would march towards Dataran Merdeka.
“The participants will perform the 'solat hajat' (prayer of needs) before marching,” Kamaruzaman said.
Initially, the gathering was mooted to protest the government's ratification of Icerd, which detractors claimed could erode the position of bumiputera and Islam.
Following the government's decision not to ratify the convention, the gathering has now turned into a celebration.
The gathering is organised by several NGOs and backed by PAS and Umno.
Yesterday, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said he expected a turnout of more than half a million. - Mkini
