The Pakatan Harapan-controlled Johor Legislative Assembly has passed an urgent motion for the state government to review the de-gazetting of Pulau Kukup's national park status.
Khairudin A Rahim (Amanah-Senggarang) moved the motion this morning. More than 10 assemblypersons stood up in support for the matter to be debated.
“Senggarang moves the motion in the honourable House for the state executive council to take note and review the status of Pulau Kukup National Park,” the motion read.
Following the debate, the House approved and passed the motion.
The motion argued that since Pulau Kukup contained the world's second-biggest mangrove forest island and was ratified as a Wetlands of Importance International site (Ramsar), it should not be de-gazetted.
According to Yeo Tung Seong (DAP-Pekan Nanas), the motion was passed with all Harapan assemblypersons standing up to support it.
“The motion was passed unanimously. The opposition did not express any objection and did not take part in the debate,” Yeo told Malaysiakini.
Yesterday, Johor exco member Aminolhuda Hassan said the de-gazetting of Pulau Kukup's national park status was done by the previous BN state government.
A circular sighted by Malaysiakini stated that it was to facilitate the land to be registered under the name of Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar.
This has been confirmed by Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, who gave his assurance that Pulau Kukup would continue to function as a park.
In a tweet at noon, Tunku Ismail published a letter from the Johor Land and Mines Office, which said that Sultan Ibrahim had consented for Pulau Kukup to remain as a national park and that it would be maintained by the state government.
