R.AGE Newsflash: Food Wastage In Malaysia

For a country that prides itself on its food, we seem to waste a lot of it.
The average Malaysian throws 1kg of food away everyday, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, when closing the Malaysian Agriculture, Horticulture and Agro-Tourism Exhibition (MAHA) 2018, recently.
This comes up to 16,000 tons a day, which could feed around 12mil people.
While a 2016 research by Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) on waste in landfills indicated that households produce the most food waste (40%), experts say that corporations have a part to play as well.
“We know that if a brand is not sold before the ‘best before’ date, it will be returned to the manufacturer, but what happens to these products?” said CEO of social surplus enterprise Grub Cycle, Redza Shahid.
