Rosmah appoints new defence counsel to face graft charges

Rosmah Mansor, the wife of former premier Najib Abdul Razak, has appointed new defence lawyers to handle her two graft charges at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court.
Lawyers Akberdin Abdul Kadir and Jagjit Singh are taking over as her counsel from Geethan Ram Vincent and K Kumaraendran.
Geethan and Kumaraendran remain her counsel for her 17 charges of money laundering.
Due to the switch, deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Akram Gharib requested a new date for case management, as the new defence counsel needs time to go through the documents.
They are also awaiting the status of the defence's application to transfer the case to the High Court, Ahmad said.
As such, judge Azman Ahmad set a new date for case management, on Jan 11 next year.
On Nov 16, Rosmah was slapped with two graft charges in relation to the solar hybrid project to provide electricity for rural schools in Sarawak.
She is accused of soliciting RM187.5 million from Jepak Holdings Sdn Bhd managing director Saidi Abang Samsudin, through her aide Rizal Mansor, to help the company secure the RM1.25 billion government contract.
She is also charged with receiving RM1.5 million from Saidi for the same reason.
Rizal is also facing charges for receiving RM5 million bribe on her behalf, and receiving RM500,000 for himself after attempting to solicit RM25 million.
Rosmah pleaded not guilty to both her charges under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009, which carries a maximum 20-year jail term and a fine if convicted.
In October, she was also charged with 17 counts of money laundering involving RM7.097 million. - Mkini
