KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Umno Youth today criticised those spreading rumours that Sabah Umno is set to shut down, saying it is a tactic by opponents to divide its grassroots members.
Its chief Abdul Aziz Julkarnain assured that all of Sabah Umno’s 25 divisions remained solid and strong.
He was commenting on rumours in social media claiming that Sabah Umno will be disbanded.
“In fact, the state Umno is making an effort to strengthen the party at the grassroots level as we remain relevant in the political landscape.
“This can be proven by the community service programmes actively carried out in all the divisions. In fact, the response from the grassroots has been encouraging,” he said here today.
Although there were rumours that several of its leaders, such as division heads, were about to leave the party, Aziz said there were enough leaders around within Sabah Umno who could step up and fill any vacuum.
“In essence, Sabah Umno has a hierarchy that is complete and structured. If the leaders choose to leave the struggle, the party will not be short of younger leaders who are more dynamic and energetic,” he said.
Speculation is rife that four of Sabah Umno’s five MPs are set to leave the party and become independents. The four are: Beluran MP Ronald Kiandee, Kudat MP Rahim Bakri, Beaufort MP Azizah Mohd Dun and Libaran MP Zakaria Edris.
But state Umno secretary Masidi Manjun said it was all speculation, adding that the party would explain its position tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Umno secretary-general Annuar Musa said the Sabah Umno leaders could be reluctant to stay with the party due to financial problems.
He said he had been assured by the majority of Sabah Umno leaders, particularly from the youth and Puteri wings, that they would be loyal to the party.
He added that the problem involved the leaders more than the ordinary members. -FMT
