RAWANG: A municipal councillor who was visiting the site of a burst pipe fell into some quicksand that spontaneously formed there on Monday (Dec 3).
Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) councillor P. Mariammal S. Ponnusamy, 52, was walking along Jalan Desa to inspect a burst pipe after complaints from residents when the ground collapsed under her feet at about 11.30am.
She was caught waist-deep in the quicksand before she was pulled to safety by her personal secretary Premah Palany, 55, and the Star Metro chief reporter Edward Rajendra, who was covering the visit.
Mariammal lost her shoes in the incident and was visibly shaken.
"It was the most terrifying three minutes of my life!
"Everytime I struggled, I could feel myself being sucked back in and it got deeper and deeper.
"Thank God, I was not alone, Premah and Edward saved me," she said.
Resident Asmaran Ismail, 60, said the ground became waterlogged over the past three-days after a pipe burst along Jalan Desa 3/3.
"I informed Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor but nothing has been done," he said.
MPS corporate department deputy director Ahmad Fauzi Ishak said the area would be cordoned off immediately for public safety and investigation.
"We will get our road engineering department to coordinate with Syabas to remedy the situation," he said.- Star
