Temple riot: Developer’s legal adviser, director out on bond

The violence was believed to have started after a group of people intruded into the temple in USJ25, Subang Jaya.
PETALING JAYA: The legal adviser and project manager of One City Development Sdn Bhd, the developer which owns the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman temple land, have been released on court bond after being remanded for investigations into the riots that took place.
Their lawyer, Haniff Khatri Abdulla, said the two men were freed last night after being detained by police since Nov 27.
“They were investigated under the Penal Code for alleged rioting, causing mischief, and causing disharmony and hatred using religion,” he said.
Haniff said there were no orders yet by the authorities whether to charge the duo.
“Since both of them are out on a court bond, they have to come to the Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday and police will inform the court on the next course of action,” he added.
The two men were arrested on Nov 26, the day the rioting occurred at the temple.
The violence was believed to have started after a group of people intruded into the temple, causing several people to be injured. The temple was also damaged and a number of vehicles torched.
The next day, a protest to oppose the temple’s relocation turned unruly as the crowd set fire to several vehicles. The office of the developer was also vandalised.
A fireman, Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim, 24, was assaulted by rioters at the scene, and suffered multiple injuries, including broken ribs.
Selangor police chief Mazlan Mansor said 102 people have been arrested over the temple violence until this morning.
Seven individuals were charged in court this week for various offences of rioting and possession of dangerous weapons, assault, causing disturbance, as well as failing to produce their identity card. - FMT
