BANGKOK: A university in Thailand which is conferring an honorary doctorate to Dr Mahathir Mohamad has described the prime minister as a role model for the region.
Rangsit University (RUS) president Dr Arthit Ourairat said the idea to present Mahathir with the honorary doctorate in social leadership, business and politics came from a group of students.
“We were considering a role model our country needs, and Dr Mahathir has everything needed in being a good leader,” he said.
“He is a decisive and a heroic leader who took the country forward and even saved the country in times of distress, including during the 1998 financial crisis. This is the type of leader we Thais too want to have.”
He said despite his age, Mahathir was energetic and still delivered speeches off the cuff.
“His ideas and vision are so fast and dynamic every day, he comes up with new solutions for the problems he faces,” said Arthit, 80.
“Though I’m 13 years younger, I just can’t keep up with him. After he won the election, he was the talk of the town in Thailand,” he added.
He said the university was “very selective” in giving out honorary doctorates, adding that Mahathir was among four persons who received it.
Three other recipients are Thai Princess Srinagarindra (Somdet Ya), King of Bhutan Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. FMT
