KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Supreme Council member Tajuddin Abdul Rahman today accused the United Nations (UN) of transgressing Malaysia’s independence.
Tajuddin, who is the Pasir Salak MP, charged that this was being done by the world body’s attempt to impose the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) on the country.
“They want to force us to accept conditions on how we conduct our lives in our own country,” he said.
He said this when addressing the anti-ICERD rally at Dataran Merdeka here.
Tajuddin claimed the UN also wanted to control Malaysia’s culture, minds and politics.
“They want to control the direction of the struggle of the Muslims and Malays in the country.
“Go to hell, United Nations,” he bellowed.
“What do they know of the situation in Malaysia, the problems of the Bumiputeras, the problems of the pribumis in Sabah and the Muslims?”
The rally, organised by Gerakan Pembela Ummah (Ummah) and supported by Umno and PAS, was initially aimed at opposing the ratification of the UN-sponsored treaty.
It was rebranded as a thanksgiving event after the government announced it did not intend to ratify the ICERD.
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang were among the leaders of the two parties who joined the 30,000 who attended the rally.
Also present were former prime minister and Umno president Najib Razak and his wife, Rosmah Mansor. -FMT
