YOURSAY | ‘Time to knit our hands, stand together in the public space, speak without fear…’
Quigonbond: DAP leader Liew Chin Tong, you are not known for waffling but on this score, I don't really know what you are getting at besides being patient.
Patience is useless. Public anger at our ideals being compromised, and being as loud as possible, is what scares governments.
Right after GE14, the sentiment was that we have this one single chance to make Malaysia great. If Pakatan Harapan failed, then there would truly be no hope.
Six months down the line, this government is saying the manifesto does not matter, and many reforms are being stalled on the excuse of being "studied".
Does DAP share these sentiments? If not, then it's time to speak up. In fact, this is the only and best time to speak up. No point speaking up after another 11 Umno MPs join Bersatu and swell the parliamentary ranks.
I feel Harapan core parties like PKR, DAP and Amanah have mismanaged the situation. You've allowed Bersatu to undergo machinations without any checks and balances. If you were thinking in good faith, you are indeed naive.
It's time to take concrete actions either at the Harapan presidential council or elsewhere to ensure the political status quo is maintained, and to push for reform.
Most of the reforms are pertinent to the opposition so they will be very incentivised to support. Even if they don't, make it a packaged deal and force it through.
Playfair: The issue (one among many) is we don't want to be stained with the sleaze that was Umno.
It is not the government’s mandate (from us) to pander to what is happening to Umno. We abhor that Umno is coming into power through the machinations of the present government. And the government seems to be relishing in this power play.
What we expect is that the bigots and rabble-rousers are dealt with quickly and those chasing their own tails using the 3Rs (race, religion, royalty) to promote fear are put on notice that this will not be tolerated at all.
Sadly, the government seems petrified to make any moves against them. I am pessimistic that anything will ever change if the hamstrung government continues to pander to these extremists.
Tommy: Umno under the present tainted leadership has to disintegrate if the current leadership continue to helm the party.
The mass resignation from Umno shows that tolerance is zero for the present leaders. Even though they had just held an election.
It does show that their loss at the general election and the dismal corruption of the leaders is sinking in. Now, Harapan has to deal with the mass resignations and whether to allow them to join or not.
There are those who are not corrupt and there are those who are. The party that embraces the corrupt would be tainted and would definitely lose in the next election. The rakyat will not be fooled again.
Quo Vadis: Yes, it’s time to knit our hands, stand together in the public space, speak without fear, and bring all our collective resources, our beliefs and vision to bear down relentlessly, without any compromise upon Harapan leadership not to accept frogs.
Uphold the vision that brought about regime change. Reject these frogs.
This is a defining moment for us, for the future of the country for our children and grandchildren.
Let it not be said that at this critical moment, the leadership failed because it allowed short-term political expediency to cloud the mind, blur the focus, and ultimately overrule and nullify the trust in Harapan that made the regime change possible.
Spratlys: It is irrelevant how many aftershocks there are. The pertinent question would be: When will the anti-hopping law be enacted in Parliament so that party hopping will be banned?
Without this, those MPs have “democratic rights” to jump wherever they want.
Nikki Harieti: Khairy Jamaluddin, Nurul Izzah Anwar, Rafizi Ramli, cool it for now. The deadwood are on their last legs.
Be trailblazers, break the barrier for a New Dawn. Look towards GE15. It's your opportunity to shine for the new generation.
Fairplayer: Those frogs from Umno are unprincipled opportunists. And Harapan is welcoming them with open arms?
Liew, I hope your article is not influenced by personal sentiments or your appointment as deputy defence minister.
The issue concerning the Umno frogs. Is it morally right for Bersatu to take them into its fold? Similarly, the taking in of other frogs by other Harapan parties? What is legal may not be moral or ethical.
Beware of the self-proclaimed racist and his Bersatu party. The taking in of tainted frogs from Umno by Bersatu is a total contradiction of Harapan’s promises during GE14.
The Wakandan: Liew, your idea may be fine, but what about that of your colleagues in the other parties?
Harapan should not be infected by racists and religious bigots from the old Umno or even those in DAP who may have that tendency.
While it is good to see the crumbling of Umno, it may not necessarily good to import all of them as they will just bring along the Umno DNA which Harapan supporters loathe so much.
Perhaps Bersatu’s Razali Idris of Terengganu should be made to explain his question when he asked, “Are you afraid to have a stronger Malay voice in Harapan (with the admission of Umno MPs)?”
What does a Malay voice amount to? That needs to be addressed before every ethnic group in Harapan asks the same question. - Mkini
