YOURSAY | ‘This obsession with one person having sole authority to do unconstitutional things is incomprehensible.’
David Dass: As Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has said repeatedly, Malaysia adheres to the rule of law. This means that Mahathir does not decide whether Umno survives or not.
It is the Registrar of Societies (ROS) acting to enforce its powers under the Societies Act 1966 that decides the issue.
Umno can go to the courts. And the courts will rule on whether the ROS had acted properly. So Umno will survive as a party if it has acted properly and has not breached the law. Mahathir cannot interfere in the process.
This is exactly what happened many years ago when Umno was declared illegal and Umno Baru came into being, and more recently when the ROS refused to register Bersatu.
LoveMalaysia2: Indeed, in what capacity and under which law does a prime minister have the power to dissolve a political party?
Surely that is the role of the Registrar of Societies and only then under the rules governing the circumstances.
This obsession with one person having the sole authority to do unconstitutional things is incomprehensible to me.
Anonymous 1689721435778173: Mahathir does not need to dissolve Umno. It will disintegrate by itself.
Umno leaders are trying to take cover by courting Mahathir. Starved of fresh funds while existing funds are either frozen or spirited away by its leaders, Umno cannot survive.
Mahathir does not need to do anything. Just let the law take its course. Umno will be gone.
To think that these very leaders who now appear so humbly with Mahathir were not so long ago so arrogant and powerful.
The meeting didn't do much good for former federal territories minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor. He still got charged with corruption.
Mahathir should allow the law to take its course.
Pemerhati Bebas: Yes, if ever Umno is to be dissolved, it is through Umno's own doing. Umno betrayed its own constitution simply to protect its leader and blindly support him.
Mahathir doesn't have to do anything and he didn't have anything to do with it. So why appeal to Mahathir? It doesn't make sense at all.
Abd Karim: Whether Mahathir likes it or not, ROS has to do the right thing and that is to declare Umno illegal. They have not adhered to their constitution in holding an AGM.
It is illegal and a crime for Mahathir to interfere with ROS and at the same time, preach to and expect civil servants to do the right thing.
Enough of bribery and corruption. Just follow the law.
I.AM.Malaysian: Mahathir is not a member of Umno Baru, therefore he can't even vote if there is a resolution to dissolve it.
It also doesn't make sense for Mahathir to use the government apparatus to dissolve Umno because, firstly, he doesn’t want to discredit this new government and himself; and secondly, the Umno leadership is doing a bad job of reviving Umno anyway.
Speaking Sense: There are laws. If Umno did not do anything to deserve it, it cannot be dissolved by Mahathir or anyone else, only by Umno itself.
If Umno had done anything warranting dissolution, then it should be dissolved, and Mahathir would have no right to stop that from happening.
So we must ask, what are these Umno leaders really doing?
YTMQL: What are you talking about? Since when does the prime minister have the power or discretion to dissolve a political party?
Unless you're implying the prime minister is abusing his power by giving instructions to ROS or the Attorney-General’s Chambers. In which case, this is a cause for a MACC investigation.
Roger 5201: Brand Umno died with 1MDB. Mahathir does not have the power to dissolve the party any more than he has the power to sustain Umno.
The latter pressed the self-destruct button with their collective and complicit silence the day former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak received RM2.6 billion in his personal bank account.
Bongek: Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan, please do the right thing from now. Remove your president and rebuild your party.
Stop the unholy association with PAS, bring your party to the centre. Learn to be a constructive opposition. Stop playing the race card.
For all you know, people like me will vote for your party again in the next general election.
Your party may not hold complete power again, but your party has the opportunity to build the country again and that is the most important thing for all Malaysians, not just a certain segment of the rakyat.
Lone_star: ‘Politikus’ and ‘Politikataks’ are not in the business of building Malaysia Baru, the rakyat are. Let's get on with our job.
‘Politikus’ and ‘Politikataks’ can only do what they do best and like disposable nappies, the rakyat will have to look for the best in the political market and change them or dispose of them as and when needed.
They do their job, as do the rakyat. We must stay vigilant always. - Mkini
