PETALING JAYA: An academic has suggested that Dr Mahathir Mohamad mediate between Anwar Ibrahim and Mohamed Azmin Ali to end the infighting in PKR.
Azizuddin Mohd Sani of Universiti Utara Malaysia told FMT he believed the prime minister would be the best person for the job of peacemaker because he commands the respect of both the PKR president and his deputy and he knows them well.
He suggested that the mediation be conducted behind closed doors and said he didn’t think it would interfere with police investigations into a sex video that has apparently played a role in deepening the divide in PKR.
Azmin is at the centre of a controversy arising from the release on the internet of clips from the video. Former Santubong PKR Youth leader Haziq Aziz has said one of the persons depicted having sex was himself and the other was Azmin, an allegation the latter has denied.
Azizuddin said the crisis in PKR was interfering with the government’s effort to stabilise the economy.
He said Anwar and Azmin should tell their supporters to stop openly engaging in factional fighting.
“If the situation continues,” he added, “it will have an impact not only on Pakatan Harapan, but also on the economy as investors keep track of leadership problems.”
Another academic attached to Universiti Utara Malaysia, Kamarul Zaman Yusoff, said the slow pace of police investigations into the video was not helping to calm the storm in PKR.
But he also said the exchange of innuendos between the two factions could be delaying the investigations. - FMT
