KUCHING: A political analyst sees Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) secretary-general Sebastian Ting as the most likely replacement for Wong Soon Koh once the Bawan Assan assemblyman vacates his seat in the state Cabinet.
Jeniri Amir of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak said Ting, who is also Piasau assemblyman, would be the best candidate as he is a senior leader in SUPP.
“I believe the chief minister will consider filling the vacant seat in the state Cabinet with a representative from SUPP since Wong was also originally from SUPP.”
However, he said it is unlikely that Ting will be appointed as a full minister.
“He will only be appointed as an assistant minister,” Jeniri told FMT.
“At the moment, I don’t see any SUPP state assemblyman who is qualified to take up Wong’s ministerial posts as Sarawak’s international trade and e-commerce minister and second finance minister. It has to be someone from a different party.”
Wong, who is also Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) president, announced his resignation on Monday.
This followed PSB’s exclusion from the new list of councillors for local authorities in the state last week.
Wong will reportedly be meeting with Abang Johari Openg within the next few days to discuss his decision.
Jeniri said a minor state Cabinet reshuffle might take place to fill Wong’s positions as international trade and e-commerce minister and second finance minister.

He added that several assistant ministers might be promoted to full ministers. - FMT
