KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Chai Kin Kong gave RM2mil to former Federal Territories minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor as a political donation in 2016, the High Court heard on Tuesday (July 16).
Chai, the director and chairman of Aset Kayamas Sdn Bhd, told the court via written statement that he had given a cheque of RM2mil to Tadmansori Holdings Sdn Bhd, dated June 14, 2016.
"On the matter of the cheque, I verify that the RM2mil payment was a donation to Tengku Adnan, as he had asked a donation from me for (Umno's) political funds.
"As I remember, Tengku Adnan stated that Umno needed political funds of about RM5mil to RM6mil for by-elections.
"I did not promise (him) how much I would give, but (told him) I would give him the donation cheque when I had money," said Chai.
Chai was a witness at the corruption trial of Tengku Adnan, who was charged on Jan 23 with receiving RM2mil as bribery from him.

Chai was a witness at the corruption trial of Tengku Adnan, who was charged on Jan 23 with receiving RM2mil as bribery from him.
Chai said that at the time, he did not know to whom Tadmansori Holdings belonged.
"At that time, I did not know who owned Tadmansori Holdings, and I didn't ask him why the donation should be given to the company and not to Umno's account," he said.
The court had prior to this heard that Tengku Adnan was a major shareholder of Tadmansori Holdings.
Chai also told the court that he himself gave the cheque to Tengku Adnan at his office at the DBKL headquarters.
"I often went to his office in DBKL headquarters since (my company) started being involved in Rumawip (Federal Territories Affordable Housing Project) to discuss issues regarding the project," he added.
On the first day of the trial, the prosecution alleged that there was conflict of interest between Tengku Adnan's post as then-Federal Territories minister and Aset Kayamas' property developing activities.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Julia Ibrahim, in her opening statement on the first day of the trial, told the court that Chai had personally handed a proposal on developing a 4.05 acres site in Bandar Tun Razak to Tengku Adnan on Jan 27, 2015.
The proposal – which was for Aset Kayamas to buy the land and to develop it into affordable (rumah mampu milik) housing units and apartments – was, however, rejected by the then Kuala Lumpur mayor, said DPP Julia.
Despite the rejection of the proposal by the mayor, Tengku Adnan continued to deal with Chai on the proposal, she said, knowing full well that there was conflict of interest between his post as minister and Aset Kayamas' business activities.
The trial will continue before Justice Mohamed Zaini Mazlan on Wednesday (July 17).- Star
