CJ heads honours list in conjunction with Penang governor’s birthday

Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat will be conferred the Darjah Utama Pangkuan Negeri, which carries the ‘Datuk Seri Utama’ title.
GEORGE TOWN: Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat will be conferred the highest state honour, the Darjah Utama Pangkuan Negeri (DUPN), which carries the “Datuk Seri Utama” title, in conjunction with the 81st birthday of Penang governor Abdul Rahman Abbas tomorrow.
The 60-year-old Kelantanese, who is the sole recipient of the title this year, is the first woman to be appointed chief justice on May 2.
A total of 877 people will receive honours, titles and medals, including 14 who will be conferred the “Datuk Seri” title, and 56 who will receive the “Datuk” title.
The investiture will be held tomorrow and continue on Monday until Wednesday, State Secretary Farizan Darus told a press conference.
Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador and Air Force chief Affendi Buang will be conferred the Darjah Panglima Pangkuan Negeri (DPPN), which carries the title “Datuk Seri”.
Customs director-general Paddy Abd Halim is among 12 who will receive the Darjah Gemilang Pangkuan Negeri (DGPN), which also carries the title “Datuk Seri”.
An honorary DGPN will be conferred on Singaporean activist and former politician Sidek Saniff, who served as an MP for six terms and later rose to be senior minister of state for education and environment.
Penang opposition leader Muhamad Yusoff Mohd Noor from Umno (right) and Universiti Sains Malaysia criminologist P Sundaramoorthy will receive the DSPN, which carries the ‘Datuk’ title.
Sidek is best known as a Malay rights activist and educationist and is also credited with leading efforts to form Mendaki, the Council for the Development of Singapore Malay/Muslim Community.
High Court of George Town head justice Hadhariah Syed Ismail will be conferred the Darjah Yang Mulia Pangkuan Negeri (DYMPN), which carries the “Datuk” title.
Penang opposition leader Muhamad Yusoff Mohd Noor from Umno will receive the Darjah Setia Pangkuan Negeri (DSPN), which also carries the “Datuk” title.
Others who will receive the DSPN include Romli Ishak, political secretary to Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Pelita Restaurant’s chief executive officer KK Sihabutheen Kirudu Mohamed and Universiti Sains Malaysia criminologist P Sundaramoorthy.

Farizan said a state banquet will be held at the Spice Arena on Monday evening to fete the recipients. - FMT
