Death penalty protesters at Singapore High Com claim Malaysians a target

Protesters at the Singapore high commission today accused the city state's government of targeting Malaysians who are facing capital punishment under Singaporean laws.
Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) adviser N Surendran claimed he was denied access to Malaysians on death row in Singapore but legal representatives of other nationalities did not face the same restrictions.
"When I and (LFL director) Melissa Sasidaran went to Singapore to meet with Malaysian prisoners, we were not allowed to do so but lawyers from other countries such as Australia were allowed.
"This is selective treatment by Singapore and targets Malaysian prisoners," he told journalists outside the Singapore high commission in Kuala Lumpur this evening.
More than 30 people had gathered outside the high commission including family members of Malaysians in Singapore who are on death row.
They also submitted a memorandum appealing for amnesty for four such Malaysian prisoners.
Ten prisoners are set to be hanged soon after the Singapore president rejected their clemency petitions. Four of them are Malaysians who were convicted for drug-related offences.
The four are K Datchinamurthy, A Gobi, Abdul Hemi Abdul Halim and another identified as only "Rahmat".
This does not include a fifth Malaysian, P Pannir Selvam, who received a reprieve on his execution at the last minute on May 24.
Singapore's Home Affairs Ministry had on July 13 issued a statement denying that it had targeted Malaysians on its death row.
The ministry said such allegations were "baseless" and that the republic's laws applied equally to both locals and foreigners. - Mkini
