PARLIAMENT | Deputy Speaker Nga Kor Ming (photo, above) is still optimistic the Prime Minister’s Question Time (PMQT) could still be implemented in the Dewan Rakyat during the next Parliament session.
This is despite the idea being shot down by Minister in Prime Minister’s Department Liew Vui Keong on June 24.
Asked to comment on Liew’s statement, Nga said efforts to reform parliamentary proceedings are still ongoing.
He said this included yesterday’s motion by the government on asset declaration for lawmakers and Ministers' Day.
“Hence, I believe PMQT will be implemented when the time is right. Just wait.
“[...] I believe our PM (Dr Mahathir Mohamad) is incredible and is capable of answering (all the questions) well. I feel this can be done by the next (Dewan Rakyat) session,” he told reporters at Parliament today.
The next Parliament session will take place from Oct 7 to Dec 5.
Yesterday the House approved a motion to compel all lawmakers to declare their assets, as well as those of their immediate family members and trustees to the MACC.
Those failing to do so will be referred to the parliamentary rights and privileges committee.
Those found to have made false declarations could be subjected up to a three-year jail term and a fine under existing laws.
Meanwhile, Ministers' Day refers to new scheduling introduced by the Dewan Rakyat to help with the attendance of cabinet members.
Nga, in announcing this yesterday, said certain days are to be designated for certain ministries in the Dewan Rakyat so that representatives need not be present throughout the entire session and can focus on their government duties.
This is on top of Ministers’ Question Time (MQT) already scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Weekly PMQT had been one of Pakatan Harapan’s election pledges before the 14th General Election. - Mkini
