Following PKR’s lead, Bersatu to open voting to all members

The Bersatu supreme council has approved the move that would open voting in party elections to all members, becoming the second Malaysian political party to do so after PKR.
Unlike PKR’s implantation, however, this would only be limited to elections at the branch and division levels, rather than including its top leadership.
Bersatu chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad said his party would hold a special meeting to amend the party constitution such that all members could vote in party elections.
“I will do the amendment so that all members have a role to play. I have discussed this at length and the supreme council has agreed,” he told reporters at a press conference after he chaired the Bersatu supreme council meeting in Putrajaya today.
Mahathir said ordinary members will play a role in determining the outcome of divisional and branch elections.
“And from the divisional level, delegates will determine the outcome of the supreme council election,” he added.
The prime minister added that all members, including the grassroots, will have the opportunity to contest for any position in the party.
“They would need to register as members before registering to contest to become president, chairperson, deputy chairperson, and so on.
“We will hold a special meeting on July 20 this year to decide on the constitutional amendment,” he said. - Mkini
