Health Minister Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad today advised parents to avoid exposing their children to sugary beverages, particularly bubble tea drinks which have experienced a recent spike in popularity.
"I would like to remind everyone that what is important is to be a smart consumer, so that you can make well-informed decisions.
"This is so that you don't consume products that jeopardise your health, no matter how attractive they look.
"Bubble tea, for instance, has a huge sugar excess," he told the media after opening the Reduce Sugar, Live Healthily campaign at Giant in Subang Jaya today.
Dzulkefly stressed that the ministry has no means to deny consumers the right to drink what they like, but that it will continue to monitor the consumption of certain sugary products.
"The most effective way is for the consumers to take their own initiative and responsibility by not encouraging their families to consume such products," he said.
Dzulkefly added that the sugar level in the bubble tea drinks is excessive, and way beyond the recommended daily intake level.
"If I am not mistaken, every 500ml (of the drink) contains about 20 teaspoons, while the recommended daily intake is eight (teaspoons)," he said. - Mkini
