I was questioned on my capability to run MACC at PSC meeting, says Latheefa

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Latheefa Koya today said she was questioned on her capability to run the anti-graft agency during a meeting with the Parliamentary Select Committee members.
“There were a variety of questions but mainly on whether I am capable and also my mission, vision and my focus (for MACC),” she told the media after the 45-minute closed-door session.
The PSC meeting was chaired by William Leong at the Parliament building.
Latheefa said she answered all the questions the best she could.
Latheefa’s appointment was questioned by various MPs as they felt she had no experience in running the commission and she was also active in politics before her appointment.
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who had appointed Latheefa without discussing with his Cabinet, had cited her no-nonsense approach, strong character, and the fact that she was not easily influenced by others and expressed her views without fear, as among the reasons why he chose her.
Latheefa also told the press that she was happy to be invited by PSC to the Parliament today.
“I am satisfied with the process and was able to answer (questions) to the best of my ability,” she said.
Leong told the media later that a report on the meeting will be submitted to Parliament.
“We also asked her on her perception about the appointment. We had full cooperation from her,” he said.
Leong added Latheefa’s appointment was in accordance with the MACC Act and Federal Constitution.
He further hoped that senior appointments will be done according to merit. - FMT
