IGP fears level of drug abuse could turn Malaysia into Colombia

Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador said today that his officers have intensified the crackdown on drugs, as the levels of substance abuse have reached "breaking point."
"We accept the fact that drug abuse in this country is at breaking point.
"If we do not tackle it now, the abuse will be on par with Colombia," he told reporters at the Police Training Centre in Kuala Lumpur today.
Hamid stressed that in the past two months, the Narcotic Crimes Investigation Department has redoubled efforts to crack down on drugs, gambling and vice, and has conducted a lot of successful raids.
These raids have even resulted in police officers being hauled up.
"We have arrested no less than 30 of our own men high on methamphetamine every week since January. That's a frightening figure.
"My own men high on meth," he lamented.
Hamid added that police have concluded their drug busting operations in Langkawi, and have engaged authorities in neighbouring countries to discuss ways to tackle drug smuggling.

Nevertheless, he believes that a more holistic approach is needed to curb drug abuse, as police raids alone cannot suffice.
"My men are tired and we can't keep doing raids. We need a holistic approach. Otherwise, it's just 'ding-dong'.
"Is this (conducting numerous raids) sustainable? Hopefully, the government can give us something 'sharper' to tackle the issue," he said.
Hamid did not elaborate on what he meant by this, but it is believed to be a reference to stricter laws.
"I believe there are many more (drug dens) and we are working hard to tackle this. We have to cut the supply from reaching the market.
"If we do not act now, our country will be destroyed," he warned. - Mkini
