PARLIAMENT | Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Salahuddin Ayub has proposed that foreign vessels caught fishing illegally in Malaysian waters be sunk after they are confiscated.
"I agree and propose that these vessels be sunk to become artificial reefs for our own interest.
"This is the appropriate action we should take as our neighbouring countries have done the same thing," Salahuddin told Dewan Rakyat during the question-and-answer session today.
Earlier, he said the government will increase the penalty against captains and crew members of fishing vessels caught trespassing in Malaysian waters.
This will be done through an amendment to the Fisheries Act, where the fine for a captain will be increased sixfold to RM6 million, according to him.
The fine for crew members will also be increased sixfold to RM600,000, he added.
