KUALA LUMPUR: Primary Industries Minister Teresa Kok today settled her lawsuit against a Malay rights group leader over his claim at a gathering for fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim that she was involved in the land dispute on the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman temple.
Her lawyer SN Nair said she and Azwanddin Hamzah settled their case amicably out of court.
“We settled the case today with an undisclosed sum of money as part of the consent judgment.
“An apology was also recorded before trial judge, judicial commissioner Rohani Ismail, in her chambers,” he told reporters.
Nair said under the court’s consent order, Azwanddin, who is president of Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM), must publish an apology within a week in three newspapers: The Star, Sin Chew Daily and Sinar Harian.
He must also retract his statement about Kok which he made on social media.
Today was supposed to be the first day of hearing for the suit.
Kok filed the suit in January, saying Azwanddin’s allegation was baseless.
She said she was never involved in the temple riots which took place in November last year, and that Azwanddin’s statement was “clearly motivated by bad motive and malicious intentions”.
She sought an unspecified amount of damages as well as an injunction forbidding Azwanddin or his agents from repeating the statement in question.
Another minister, P Waytha Moorthy, had also sued Azwanddin, claiming the JMM Leader had used a derogatory term and made references to him during the same gathering.
Waytha’s suit against Azwanddin will begin on Aug 16. - FMT
