KUCHING: Kuching DAP Youth wants the Registrar of Societies (RoS) to suspend the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) following the civil forfeiture lawsuits filed by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to recover funds reportedly related to 1MDB.
Committee member Sim Kiat Leng told reporters at a press conference today that the wing had lodged a complaint with the RoS last Friday.
“Under Section 13 of the Societies Act 1966, the registrar may, in certain cases, cancel the registration of any society registered under Section 7.
“One of the grounds for the registrar to cancel the registration is that the society is likely to be used for unlawful purposes or for purposes prejudicial to or incompatible with peace, welfare, good order or morality in Malaysia,” he said.
Last month, MACC filed civil forfeiture suits against 41 individuals and entities, including SUPP, to recover money allegedly transferred from the account of former prime minister Najib Razak.
SUPP later said it would allow the law to take its course with regards to the matter
In a statement, the party secretariat said: “On June 26 last year, SUPP received a notice from its bank informing that the party headquarters’ account was frozen by MACC.
“On Sept 24 the same year, the party received further notice that the account was seized by MACC.”
Saying it hoped for closure, it added that office bearers had given their cooperation to MACC.
Sarawak PKR Youth lodged a report with MACC in 2016, claiming SUPP had received RM1 million from Najib. - FMT
