PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia has joined the Arab League in condemning Israel's controversial opening of the "Pilgrimage Road" tunnel that was dug from under the village of Silwan to the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Foreign Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said Malaysia disagrees with Israel's latest move as there was no consultation with Palestine.
"We want to express that we reject this latest action of the Israel government.
"This is something that Israel did unilaterally. We are saddened by this incident.
Saifuddin reiterated that Malaysia "remains steadfast" in its support of the Palestinian cause.
"As far as we are concerned, on issues relating to Israel and Palestine, we remain steadfastly on the side of the Palestinians, on all issues.
"For example, the declaration of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, or the opening of new checkpoints or new routes by Israel.
"It has to be something that is conducted in consultation with the Palestinians. That has always been our stance," said Saifuddin.
The Arab League had condemned Israel's move, stressing that it rejects "any Israeli attempts to change the identity of the old city of the occupied Jerusalem".- Star
