PETALING JAYA: More Malaysians will finally get to watch “The Wolf of Wall Street”, the movie directed by Martin Scorsese starring Leonardo DiCaprio which has been entangled in the 1MDB scandal.
The 2013 movie, which Malaysian censors banned from the cinemas due to its excessive depiction of sex and drugs as well as the use of profanities, is given an 18+ rating with a remark on the subscription-based streaming service that it is “raunchy”.
The timing of the movie’s addition on Netflix here comes as prosecutors slap five charges of money laundering amounting to over RM1 billion on Riza Aziz, the stepson of former prime minister Najib Razak. Riza is also the co-chairman of producer Red Granite Pictures.
The three-hour movie was named by the US Department of Justice in its civil forfeiture suits to recover billions of dollars stolen from 1MDB.
Investigators said part of the stolen money was used to finance the production of the movie, which had a budget of US$100 million.
The movie, which also stars Margot Robbie, Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey, Kyle Chandler, Jon Favreau and Rob Reiner, won a Golden Globe award for Best Actor (DiCaprio) and five Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor (DiCaprio), Best Director (Martin Scorsese), Best Supporting Actor (Jonah Hill) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Terence Winter).
In Singapore, the movie was shown in select cinemas due to its explicit content, with a “R21” rating that limited the audience to those over 21.
In March last year, Riza’s Red Granite agreed to pay US$60 million (RM234 million) to the US government to resolve allegations that it profited from corrupt money involving 1MDB. The payment was settled within six months. -FMT
