Najib's family wants breakdown, examination of seized items

Former premier Najib Abdul Razak and his family have filed a notice of motion seeking a detailed inventory of the items which police seized from them last year.

Lawyer Syahirah Hanafiah informed the Kuala Lumpur High Court that Najib filed his notice on July 18, while his wife Rosmah Mansor and daughter Nooryana Najwa filed theirs on July 19.

In his affidavit, the former premier said the motion was made as the forfeiture proceedings involved many items, and the description of "various brands" used was vague and unclear.

He said this would make it difficult to render an effective claim over the seized items.

Meanwhile, Rosmah and Nooryana wanted physical access to the items to examine them.

The forfeiture suits involved 315 handbags, 14 wristwatches, 27 pairs of shoes, and cash in various currencies.

Deputy public prosecutor Faten Hadni Khairuddin requested for time to examine the law as there is no specific procedure to fulfil the requests made under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act.

Judge Mohamed Zaini Mazlan subsequently set Oct 14 to hear the motion.

Following the general election last year, police raided Najib's house and several other residences in connection with their investigation into the 1MDB scandal, where jewellery, branded handbags, watches, sunglasses, cash in various currencies and vehicles were seized.

Subsequently, on May 7 this year, police and the government initiated a civil forfeiture suit against Najib, Rosmah, their three children and 13 others.
