Anwar Ibrahim dismissed the need for Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to discuss with Pakatan Harapan leaders before inviting Malay-based parties, including Umno and PAS, to join Bersatu.
“Not necessary (for Mahathir to first discuss with Harapan). That is a decision by Bersatu.
“I'm just saying, in the spirit of the Harapan coalition, I think he would probably let us know or inform us (of his proposal) accordingly,” the PKR president told reporters in the Parliament lobby today.
Asked if it was politically correct for Mahathir to have issued the invitation without consulting his allies, the Port Dickson MP said all quarters should wait for the prime minister's explanation at the Harapan presidential council meeting later today.
“We haven't heard from him. So I think we should give him that opportunity,” he added.
Last Friday, Mahathir, who is also Bersatu chairperson, said Malay-based parties should come together to unite the community.
He reasoned that the community was becoming fragmented due to the presence of numerous Malay-based parties.
Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin reacted positively to Mahathir’s action, deeming it reasonable. - Mkini
