KUALA LUMPUR: The transport ministry today denied claims by the Grab Drivers Malaysia Association (GDMA) of low passing rates for those sitting for the public service vehicle (PSV) licence test.
Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook (DAP-Seremban) said between April 1 and June 30, 2019, a total of 16,338 candidates had taken the PSV theory test, 10,151 or 62% of whom had passed.
“The statement by GDMA dated May 14 that only 10 to 50% from each class pass is not accurate,” he told the Dewan Rakyat.
He was responding to a question from Mahdzir Khalid (BN-Padang Terap) who asked about mitigation measures taken by Putrajaya following GDMA’s claim.
GDMA president Arif Asyraf Ali had alleged that less than 10% of 200,000 drivers in the e-hailing service are PSV-ready, citing difficulties such as steep fees and difficult tests.
Loke also said e-hailing fares would remain competitive even after the new regulations come into force, and that an increase in rates is unlikely as it would lead to users boycotting their services.
“E-hailing companies will need to offer reasonable and competitive fares to their passengers, so I do not foresee it will change tremendously,” he said to a supplementary question from Mohd Shahar Abdullah (BN-Paya Besar). - FMT
