Orang Asli deaths – Deputy MB smells a rat behind inquest proposal

Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Mohd Amar Abdullah is puzzled over the proposal to hold an inquest into the deaths of 15 Orang Asli from the Bateq tribe in the state, which is said to be due to measles.
The PAS leader also did not rule out that something could be amiss with regard to the Home Ministry stating it is prepared to consider holding an inquest into the matter.
“I don't understand the motive for holding an inquest when the Chemistry Department's report has been revealed to the public.
“So I don't think there is a need for this and I am also not ruling out the possibility there is an ulterior agenda behind the proposal to hold the inquest,” he added, without elaborating.
Mohd Amar, who was speaking to reporters in Kota Bharu this afternoon, also pointed out that the proposal for an inquest contradicted Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and the Health Ministry's earlier statements on the deaths.
Yesterday, Deputy Home Minister Mohd Azis Jamman said a decision on whether to hold an inquest would be made after receiving the post mortem and chemistry reports.
He added that the ministry is willing to consider the inquest proposal in order for the public to know what was the real cause behind the deaths in Kuala Koh, Gua Musang.
Meanwhile, Mohd Amar said the government has confirmed that the water source in the village is not contaminated due to mining activities in the area.
“So there is nothing to be disputed. We (the state government) feel there are certain quarters dissatisfied with the report and are attempting to pin the blame on the state government.
“We feel there is a political agenda (to focus on Kuala Koh) when the focus should be on the crisis in Pasir Gudang, Johor, which has recurred,” he added.
Mohd Amar also claimed that certain quarters are still taking samples from the water source in Kuala Koh. - Mkini
