Penang confirms PSR approved by Environment Dept

Having previously denied reports that the Penang South Reclamation (PSR) project had obtained federal approval, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow today confirmed that the project has been greenlit.
Chow said his office had received a fax from the Environment Department confirming its approval for the project, which involves the creation of three artificial islands.
However, he said the green light was given pending 72 conditions, and not 23 as reported by The Star yesterday.
"We are still awaiting the official copy (of the report), which will be sent to us. Currently, we are studying the content as the document is quite big," he said, after attending the Taiwan Expo in Bayan Baru today.
The three islands, measuring 9.3, 4.45 and 3.23 square kilometres respectively, are to be reclaimed off the coast of Permatang Damar Laut, near Bayan Lepas.
The land is meant to be developed to fund the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP), which the state government has estimated to cost RM46 billion.
The PTMP promises to enhance connectivity within the island and ease traffic congestion, by constructing highways and a light rail transit system over the next 30 years.
Driven by project delivery partner SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd, the company is a joint venture between Gamuda Bhd and Penang real estate development firms Loh Phoy Yen Holdings Sdn Bhd and Ideal Property Development Sdn Bhd.
Yesterday, Chow said The Star’s report headlined 'Penang gets nod to develop islands' had misrepresented the PSR project to the public.
He also accused the news portal of publishing "factual errors and reckless assumptions" in its report, adding his office has yet to receive an official confirmation regarding the matter. - Mkini
