PETALING JAYA: Members of PPBM’s Supreme Council have questioned a survey by a Selangor government think tank claiming that the majority of people do not want Dr Mahathir Mohamad to remain as prime minister beyond two years.
Federal minister Redzuan Yusof noted that the survey by Institut Darul Ehsan (IDE) only involved 1,597 people, saying this is not representative of the masses.
“It’s an opinion poll carried out by a think tank with links to PKR leaders,” the Alor Gajah MP told FMT.
“I can do a survey in my own division, which has more than 3,000 members, and the support for Mahathir to stay on as PM would be overwhelming.”
The IDE survey, conducted across parliamentary constituencies in the peninsula over three days from June 28 to 30, also showed that 45% of respondents wanted Anwar Ibrahim as the next prime minister.
Under a deal struck by the PH leadership, Anwar will succeed Mahathir as prime minister although no time frame has been set for the transfer of power.
However, Redzuan said Mahathir had been a key factor in Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) victory at the polls last year.
He claimed that other PH component parties had been allotted easier seats than PPBM which took on Umno and PAS in their respective strongholds.
He urged “some people” to let Mahathir carry on running the country instead of pressuring him to leave office before he decides to do so.
“Just be patient,” he added. “Mahathir is a man of his word, and he has promised to hand over power to Anwar once he has laid the foundation to rebuild a better Malaysia.”
Tariq Ismail also questioned the sample size of the IDE survey, saying a poll of 1,600 people is not a proper indicator.
“Those who wish for a change of PM have nothing better to do, and they are not fit to be in Parliament,” he said.
“Like it or not, if it wasn’t for Mahathir and Muhyiddin Yassin, they would still be in the opposition, or in jail.”
He said it was more important for Malaysia to get its economy back on track, adding that domestic and foreign investors want to see medium- and long-term solutions to issues in the country.
“What are Anwar’s solutions to economic problems? What solutions is he bringing to the table?
“Any sudden change in leadership now will only add to the uncertainty,” he said, adding that Mahathir should be given space and time to fix the country and hand over power as he has promised. - FMT
