KUALA LUMPUR: A group of around 200 people today urged Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali, who is at the centre of allegations of gay sex, to resign.
Demonstrating outside Sogo along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman this evening, the group, led by Umno Supreme Council member Lokman Adam Noor, questioned why no action was taken against the minister.
They claimed that PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, who was then deputy prime minister, was made to resign when he was embroiled in a similar scandal back in 1998.
They added that the controversy, sparked by the release of a video taken in a hotel room in Sandakan, had embarrassed the nation.
They also questioned if Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad was now giving preferential treatment to Azmin.
The group, calling itself Secretariat Suara Rakyat, carried placards which read “Azmin, please resign, don’t embarrass the country”, “We want the abolition of tolls, not gay sex video” and “Malaysian citizens embarrassed by minister”.
The rain failed to disperse the protesters.
‘More videos on PH leaders soon’
Speaking to reporters, Lokman also claimed that more incriminating videos involving senior Pakatan Harapan leaders may surface soon.
However, he did not mention any names or details.
He said the demonstration today was held to also protest LGBT activities, especially among members of the government.
“Before this, we have seen other NGOs who have carried out demonstrations. At least they were young people who were brave enough to protest social ills posed by LGBT.”
He added that he had made a police report last June 11 asking the police to investigate who was responsible for spreading the gay sex video.
He denied that the protesters today were further humiliating the persons involved in the scandal.
“I made a police report to ask them to investigate who spread the video. I also asked the police to investigate who the actors were in the video. Why? Because it is a crime.
“We do not want this issue to be hidden and swept under the carpet.” - FMT
