Senator wants answers over lower number of Indian students for matriculation

MIC senator T Mohan has cried foul over the reduction in the intake of Indian students for the matriculation programme this year.
He demanded an answer for the number of places for Indian students dropping from 1,804 last year to 1,212 this year.
“This (intake for 2019) has shown a drastic decline.
“Is this because the number of Indian applicants has reduced in 2019? Or was it a cabinet directive? Who made the decision?” he asked.
Mohan suggested that if the number had been deliberately reduced, then it would be a case of racism under the Pakatan Harapan government.
In a written reply to Dewan Negara yesterday, the Education Ministry said the number of Indian students in 2018 was 1,804 whereas 1,212 for this year.
The senator said during BN's administration, 1,493 Indian students were given places of the 1,500 allocated for the community.
“Despite this, Harapan leaders (who were then in the opposition) made noise. Where are they now?
“Harapan also rejected BN's agreement to give 2,200 places for Indian students in 2018. So who is the real racist?” he asked.
Malaysiakini has contacted Education Ministry officials as well as Deputy Education Minister Teo Nie Cheng for comment.
Previously, the spotlight fell on the matriculation programme after the Harapan government decided to maintain the 90 percent quota for bumiputera students.
However, it decided to increase the intake of students, starting next year. - Mkini
