PETALING JAYA: Umno Youth has called on Yeo Bee Yin to explain why a fellow DAP member was appointed to be the Malaysia Sustainable Energy Development Authority (Seda) chairman, barely months after announcing a large-scale solar power project worth RM2bil.
Its Youth chief Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Minister must explain the rationale behind the appointment of Ipoh Timur MP Wong Kah Woh (pic) as the new Seda chairman.
"The rakyat deserve to know the reasons, because Yeo had not only allegedly breached the Pakatan Harapan election manifesto not to appoint political cronies in government agencies, but had also raised concerns over conflict of interest.
"Yeo had announced the RM2bil allocation for a large-scale solar project in late December.
"Such a project would be under Seda, which is an agency set up during the era of Barisan Nasional to spearhead the growth and development of renewable energy.
"Are there no experts among engineers, professionals and corporate figures to take up this key position in Seda?" said Asyraf on Monday (July 22) in response to the appointment of Wong as the new Seda chairman.
Bernama reported that Wong takes over the role of chairman from Datuk Ir Ahmad Fauzi Hasan, who has been serving as acting chairman of Seda since July 2018.
Seda is a statutory body reporting to the Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Ministry.
It was established in September 2011 with the key purpose of driving the renewable energy and energy efficiency agenda in the country.- Star
