Activist detained over tweet on Malacca governor's alleged convoy U-turn

Activist Jay Jay Denis has been detained by police over a tweet last month concerning Malacca Governor Mohd Ali Rustam.

In the Sept 6 tweet, he claimed to have witnessed a convoy with police outriders and escort vehicles blocking traffic on the Sprint Highway to perform a U-turn.

He said Ali later emerged from one of the cars.

Jay Jay claimed that Ali had gone to have a family dinner at a restaurant in Medan Damansara, Kuala Lumpur, and posted a video of Ali's convoy leaving the vicinity after the meal.

And today, the activist posted on Facebook that three police officers from the Alor Gajah police district headquarters had come to his house in Klang Valley to detain him.

He said the officers informed him that a police report had been lodged against him over the tweet.

Jay Jay was then taken by the officers back to the Alor Gajah police district headquarters.

When contacted, Jay Jay informed Malaysiakini that he would be detained overnight.

Alor Gajah district police chief Arshad Abu confirmed the activist was being held at the police district's lockup.

Arshad told Malaysiakini that investigations are being done under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, which criminalises statements that cause alarm or may induce someone to commit an offence against the state.

He said that Jay Jay is also being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act - which covers misuse of the internet.

Veteran lawyer Ambiga Sreenevasan tweeted that she was on the way to Malacca to represent Jay Jay.

As Malacca governor - Ali is a member of the Conference of Rulers.

Last year, four were charged for insulting Ali over the latter’s Twitter post of his visit to Kesang Tua, where Filipino Olympic gold medalist weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz had trained.

Another person was probed under the Sedition Act for tweeting three question marks "???" in response to Ali's tweet. - Mkini
