Agong revokes emergency proclamation for three vacant constituencies

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong yesterday revoked an emergency proclamation in two parliamentary constituencies and one state legislative assembly, in a decision believed to be connected to the 15th general election which is highly speculated to be held soon.

The constituencies are the Batu Sapi parliamentary seat and Bugaya state seat in Sabah, and the Gerik parliamentary seat in Perak.

They were placed under a state of emergency following the passing of their incumbent representatives in 2020, when the country was still badly hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.

It was done to halt by-elections during the outbreak, as the Federal and Sabah state constitutions require that an election be held within 60-days after the respective seats became vacant.

“We are satisfied that the need for the proclamation of emergency has ended and an action to revoke the proclamation is required.

"Consistent with Clauses (1) and (3) of Article 150 of the Federal Constitution we may revoke a proclamation of emergency.

"Therefore, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah by the grace of Allah, Yang di-Pertuan Agong of the states and territories of Malaysia, in exercise of the powers conferred, revoke the proclamation of emergency," said each of the revocation proclamations.

Sultan Abdullah issued the revocations yesterday at the Istana Negara, according to the proclamation documents which were published on the Attorney-General's Chambers website for Federal Legislation.

Liew Vui Keong held the Batu Sapi seat until his death from a lung infection on Oct 2, 2020.

On Nov 16 the same year, Gerik MP Hasbullah Osman passed away due to a heart attack, while Bugaya assemblyperson Manis Muka Darah died a day later also from health issues. - Mkini
