In 2013, the Bukit Katil seat - now known as Hang Tuah Jaya - was supposed to be a stepping stone for then Malacca chief minister Mohd Ali Rustam to become a federal minister.
However, he was bested by PKR's Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Yusof, who also defeated him in Hang Tuah Jaya in 2018.
Now, another former Malacca chief minister, Abdul Rahim Thamby Chik, is eyeing the seat for a comeback to mainstream politics.
"I will contest in Hang Tuah Jaya, maybe... if it happens," he was quoted as saying by Astro Awani yesterday.
Rahim (above) appears to have joined Bersatu after his initial bid was blocked in 2018.
He had last contested an election in 1995.
Rahim most notably served as Malacca's chief minister from 1982 to 1994.
He had resigned from the post amid allegations that he was involved in a sexual assault case. He had also been accused of corruption.
Rahim had denied the allegations and said he resigned to allow investigations to be carried out without interference.
No charges were pressed against him, and he claimed all evidence against him turned out to be false.
Campaigned for Bersatu
In 2018, he had attempted to join Bersatu, but his membership was not confirmed then, as Rahim’s move received a backlash from Pakatan Harapan.
The last media report on his membership application was in March 2019, and Bersatu had not yet made a decision then.
However, a check on his social media showed that Rahim's membership was eventually accepted by Bersatu - on an undisclosed date.
He had helped campaign for Bersatu during the Tanjung Piai by-election in November 2019.
Meanwhile, in his predictions for the next general election, Rahim believes that his former party, Umno, won't win more than 50 parliamentary seats. - Mkini
