Kedah bans concerts, festivals ‘that can break local norms’

The viral video clips were said to be from the two-day ‘Muda Mudi Weekend Fest’ music festival which featured several local bands.

PETALING JAYA: All concerts and festivals that can lead to people breaking local norms and committing unruly behaviour have been banned with immediate effect, says menteri besar Sanusi Md Nor.

In a statement, he said the decision was made after clips of youths dancing at a recent concert had gone viral on social media.

According to Sanusi, such unruly behaviour was not permitted in the state.

“The (viral clips) of youths dancing during the concert at Balai Seni Alor Setar yesterday is a sign that any activities that can cause others to break the local societal norms must not be allowed to spread,” he said.

The clips were said to have been taken at the two-day “Muda Mudi Weekend Fest” music festival which featured several local bands.

However, Sanusi said, healthy activities like fun runs, fun rides, treasure hunts, fishing competitions, and others that were in accordance with the law were encouraged.

Sanusi added that district officers in the state have been informed of this directive when it comes to issuing licenses for entertainment-related events.

According to Bernama, the viral video of the event had also caused some uneasiness as the venue was not far from Masjid Zahir in the state capital.

Meanwhile, Kedah tourism, arts and culture committee chairman Firdaus Ahmad was quoted in a media report yesterday as saying that the state government did not receive detailed information about the contents of the festival, including the concert held, and that he would call the main organisers of the festival for an explanation. - FMT
