Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim today reminded Umno that the prerogative to call for a general election remains in the hands of the prime minister, not its individual MPs.
"How many seats does Umno has? Thirty-eight? In our system 38 MPs cannot force an election," he told reporters in Subang Jaya today.
Umno currently has 37 MPs in the Dewan Rakyat with Pekan MP Najib Abdul Razak in jail for corruption.
"The decision must be made with the PM's prerogative. If the prime minister has the strength to act with sanity as the prime minister," said Anwar after the launch of his newest book, “SCRIPT For a Better Malaysia”.
The PKR president said this when asked for comments on the Umno supreme council's decision for Parliament to be dissolved soon and make way for the 15th general election this year.
On Friday, Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said that Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob will present a proposed date for dissolution to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in accordance with Article 40(1) of the Federal Constitution.
Since then, critics of Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi have shot down the move said to be taken without consideration of public interest, particularly when faced with the risks of an annual monsoon.
Meanwhile, on Pakatan Harapan's support for the upcoming Budget 2023 to be tabled in Parliament on Oct 7, Anwar said they are still looking into the matter.
"We would like to stress on matters of government administration and corruption, dubious projects.
"Including on medical and vaccine procurements. So far there has been no transparency," he said.
The Port Dickson MP added that he has also filed motions in Dewan Rakyat, including on the fall of the ringgit.
Earlier, Anwar appeared in a panel discussion on his latest book, published by think-tank Institut Darul Ehsan and the Centre for Postnormal Policy & Future Studies. - Mkini
