PETALING JAYA: The decision by PAS to contest the general election under its own logo in three states is an effort by the party to maximise its name recognition and its chances of winning, says a political analyst.
Oh Ei Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs said the decision did not indicate a lack of cohesion between PAS and Perikatan Nasional.
“Other coalitions have had similar arrangements before, such as PKR using its own logo in the Johor state elections,” Oh added.
However, another analyst, Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara, said the PAS decision would create a “very strong negative perception” of PN.
“It may give a perception that PN’s symbol is not strong or influential enough, which can be translated to the coalition being incapable of forming a new federal government after the elections,” Azmi told FMT.
PAS announced earlier that it would use its own logo in Kelantan, Terengganu, and Kedah, and would probably use the PN logo in other states. PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the decision would be conveyed to the PN leadership, HarakahDaily reported.
PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin had said on Tuesday that coalition partners had agreed to campaign under the PN logo.
At the PAS assembly in September, delegates from Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah and Selangor demanded that PAS candidates in these four states use the party’s distinctive “moon” symbol for the elections.
Azmi noted that PAS’ decision could have stemmed from an agreement, where the party would remain with PN, in exchange for using its own logo in Kelantan, Terengganu, and Kedah.
“I think PAS has struck an agreement with Bersatu that if they were to remain in PN, then some leeway of logo usage would be given,” he said.
“However, outside those three states, PAS is aware that its logo was unattractive to voters, and therefore it has agreed to use the PN logo in those areas.” - FMT
