Ahead of PAS leaders' meeting today to decide on their political allies for the 15th general election (GE15), among others, the Islamist party is highly unlikely to work with Umno.
Umno supreme council member Puad Zarkashi said this, citing PAS ministers' recent role in penning a petition to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to not allow the election to be held this year due to flood risks.
"It is said that PAS will meet today to decide whether or not it wants to work with Umno.
"The PAS muktamar decided that the party should resume cooperation with Umno, and (its president Abdul) Hadi (Awang) supported the motion, and Umno accepted this with an open heart," Puad (above) recalled.
To that end, Umno imposed three conditions on PAS - that the party must sever political ties with Bersatu, exit the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition and also announce publicly that it has mufaraqah (leave a congregation) from Bersatu and PN.
What followed this was conflicting statements by PAS leaders, including its ministers joining their Bersatu counterparts in sending a petition against the election being held this year to the king, Puad noted.
PAS not keen on Umno
"This gives out a signal that PAS does not want to work with Umno and they are hesitant to part ways with Bersatu. It is also proof that nothing will happen, as long as politics becomes the basis for ummah solidarity.
"If PAS argues that ummah unity must encompass all (Malay-Muslim groups), then why does PAS not want Amanah to join Muafakat Nasional (MN)? Is that not playing politics?" asked Puad.
According to him, Umno imposed conditions on PAS as the party does not want to get cheated a second time.
"Umno doesn’t do drama. To Umno, Bersatu is a rival who had wanted to destroy us since it (Bersatu) was still a 'baby'.
"Umno, Bersatu, and PAS are all political parties, but Umno is wiser in dealing with the differences in opinions compared to PAS leaders.
"The main thing now is Umno will not get burned twice,” Puad stressed. - Mkini
