PETALING JAYA: Volunteers who ran a voter carpool in 2018 have revived their efforts to get voters to the polling station at the coming general election.
A notice was posted on social media shortly after prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob called a snap general election by requesting the dissolution of Parliament.
Opposition politicians have been critical of the holding of elections because of the fear of flooding during the annual monsoon season, expected to begin in mid-November.
Twitter users have begun to respond to the carpool initiative, with some already offering lifts to Malacca, Perak and Kelantan.
The carpool initiative’s co-founder Raja Syazwani said: “We’ll be focusing on connecting Malaysians who offered help due to the coming monsoon season while retaining the existing carpooling initiatives throughout Malaysia.”
She said the group managed to connect over 7,000 people to offer their cars for voter transport.
Syazwani said they will be working with other groups to hold awareness campaigns and maximise their resources.
“We hope more owners of 4WD vehicles will come forward and offer to help,” she said. - FMT
