‘YB Hee has answered’ - MB sidesteps poser on Bukit Lagong quarries

It has been a week since Malaysiakini reported on two Selangor GLCs’ plans to quarry the Bukit Lagong Forest Reserve, but Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari, who chairs both GLCs, remains silent on this issue.

The Selangor PKR chief sidestepped a question on the matter when met as he was leaving an event at Bandar Utama today.

When approached on the matter, Amiruddin said to Malaysiakini, “YB Hee has replied right? YB Hee has replied right?”

Then, Amirudin’s officers escorted him to exit the venue through an elevator.

MB holds natural resources portfolio

Amirudin was referring to Hee Loy Sian, the Selangor state executive councillor in charge of tourism, the environment, green technology, and orang asli affairs.

Last Friday, Hee confirmed that around 28 percent of the Bukit Lagong forest reserve is set to be quarried without the land being excised from the reserve.

He stressed that the project was above board and has fulfilled all the necessary requirements, including an environmental impact assessment.

However, environmental watchdog Rimba Disclosure Project and other NGOs demanded the government to reveal more details, including the approval procedures, the approving agency and how these 27 companies were chosen.

They highlighted that quarries technically fall under the natural resources portfolio instead of the environmental portfolio.

“Hee’s portfolio covers environmental matters, however, natural resources fall under the menteri besar’s portfolio. Therefore, we hope the Selangor menteri besar will make a statement on this issue in the future.”

Hee’s statement did not address the GLCs’ involvement in the proposed quarrying.

Malaysiakini previously revealed that three developers involved in the quarrying are linked to the Selangor state government.

Two of them are Menteri Besar Selangor Incorporated and Permodalan Negeri Selangor Berhad (PNSB) – both are chaired by Amirudin.

The other is Koperasi Jabatan Perhutanan Negeri Selangor Berhad. According to its website, it is a cooperative for current and former staff of the Selangor Forestry Department. - Mkini
