BN has assigned the candidacy rights for Tangga Batu seat in Malacca to MCA.
At a press conference last night, Tangga Batu Umno division chief Mohamad Ali Mohamad said the division leadership accepted the decision.
Ali said he has met all 70 Umno branch leaders in his division and a unanimous decision was reached to back the MCA candidate.
"What is important is that we form a BN government that will benefit the rakyat," he said, according to Sinar Harian.
In 2004, the Batu Berendam parliamentary constituency was carved into two - Tangga Batu and Bukit Katil.
Tangga Batu, a Malay-majority constituency, was considered a stronghold of former chief minister Idris Haron at one point.
However, PKR's Rusnah Aluai managed to wrest the seat from BN during the 2018 election by securing 46.89 percent of the votes cast.
Rusnah will be defending her seat.
Ali said it was not unusual for MCA to be fielded in Tangga Batu because the party once held the Batu Berendam seat.
He added that Chinese voters only made up 24 percent of the electorate and suggested that the Malay voters will be able to see beyond race when voting.
"We are confident the people of Tangga Batu will choose BN because we believe in multiculturalism," he said. - Mkini
