Anwar welcomes IGP’s warning against inflammatory social media posts

Anwar Ibrahim says efforts to establish a responsible and stable government should not end in chaos.

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Anwar Ibrahim has welcomed the police’s warning of stern action against those behind recent social media postings that touched on racial and religious sensitivities.

In a Facebook post this morning, the PKR president said he was concerned that there were “desperate and selfish” parties who had been “fanning the flames of racist sentiment and rhetoric” after the general election.

“Efforts to establish a government that is responsible and stable should not end in chaos as Malays, Chinese, Indians, Orang Asli, Sabahans and Sarawakians are brothers and Malaysians who love peace,” he said.

“I very much welcome the stern statement by Inspector-General of Police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani to stop any development that could threaten the unity of Malaysia.”

In a statement yesterday, Acryl Sani said the police had discovered social media posts which touched on racial and religious sensitivities following the elections on Saturday.

Reminding social media users to refrain from misusing such platforms to circulate inflammatory content, he said stern action will be taken against those who threaten security and public order, including under the Sedition Act.

While Acryl Sani did not refer to any particular post, Malaysiakini reported that several TikTok postings had warned of a possible repeat of the May 13 race riots.

They were posted some 48 hours after polling on Saturday, which ended in a hung parliament for the first time in Malaysia’s history. - FMT
