PETALING JAYA: Perak election candidates going on walkabouts are required to get a permit from the district police chief the day before, says state police chief Yusri Hassan Basri.
In a statement, he said this applies to public speeches as well, adding that the permits were needed to ensure “safety and public order”.
He added that those who did not comply with the requirement would be subject to provisions under the Election Offences Act 1954.
“Police have been given powers to issue permits under the Act,” he said.
“Walkabouts can involve one person, or a group, moving from one place to another to meet others to campaign for votes.”
He said police would process all applications as soon as possible.
He added that to date, 233 permits had been approved, of which 212 were for ceramahs.
Separately, PSM election director S Arutchelvan said he was “shocked” to find out that Rembau police now required candidates to apply for permits for walkabouts.
In a statement, he said it was a “mockery to democracy” when even the most basic campaigning activities, such as walkabouts, required police permits. - FMT
