KUALA LUMPUR: An eight-year-old Johor schoolboy, Danish Rayqal Firdaus, from Kluang, was awarded the Hang Tuah medal for bravery today after saving his siblings who were trapped in a house fire on June 29.

The award was presented by Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, wife of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, at the national Children’s Day celebration.

The award is presented in recognition of children involved in outstanding acts of bravery, such as saving lives and property during an emergency, disaster or accidents.

Danish Rayqal, 8, had saved his brother and sister, Darish Rizqe, 6, and Nurdiya Delisha, 4, from a house fire by dragging them to the kitchen and calling out for help. All three were later rescued by neighbours.

“Initially I did not know what to do during the fire but then I gathered myself and took my brother and sister to the kitchen before seeking help,” he said after receiving the award. He said his recollections of the day were now hazy. - FMT
