PETALING JAYA: Muda will field its Perak chief, Mutalib Uthman, for the Masjid Tanah parliamentary seat in Melaka in the general election (GE15).
Mutalib, one of Muda’s co-founders, is a member of the party’s central executive committee. He is the party’s sixth candidate in its maiden general election outing.
He will be joining Umno’s Abdul Hakim Abdul Wahid and Pejuang’s Handrawirawan Abu Bakar in challenging Mas Ermieyati Samsudin, who will be seeking to retain her seat for a third term under the Perikatan Nasional banner.
Mas Ermieyati, the deputy law minister, had won the Masjid Tanah seat in May 2018 with a majority of 8,159 votes against Pakatan Harapan’s Sabirin Ja’afar. She was then in Umno.
Mutalib had caused confusion last Sunday when he made a surprise announcement on Facebook about his candidacy for the Tapah parliamentary seat.
He later apologised over the premature announcement and said the Tapah seat would be contested by PKR. - FMT
