Teresa: Jamal owes me money, candidacy qualification doubtful

Incumbent Seputeh MP Teresa Kok has urged the Election Commission to disqualify Jamal Md Yunos' candidacy for the Sungai Besar election.

In a letter to EC chairperson Abdul Ghani Salleh, Kok said she had served Jamal with a bankruptcy notice on Aug 30 based on a judgment she received on July 26.

"Jamal has not fulfilled the court order and my bankruptcy proceeding against him is ongoing," Kok told Abdul Ghani.

In view of this, Kok urged the EC to prevent Jamal from being a candidate for Sungai Besar during the nomination process tomorrow.

During the nomination process, representatives from the police and the insolvency department will be present to screen candidates.

According to Article 48(1) of the Federal Constitution, a person is qualified for membership of Parliament if one was an "undischarged bankrupt" or a convict that has served a sentence of more than one year or is fined more than RM2,000 and has not received a free pardon.

Kok's bankruptcy notice stated that Jamal owed her RM351,479.45.

On July 25, the Kuala Lumpur High Court ordered Jamal to pay RM300,000 to Kok as damages for his 2017 speech, where he accused the DAP lawmaker of abusing Yayasan Warisan Anak Selangor (Yawas) funds.

Jamal lodged a report with the MACC with the same allegations, leading to a raid on Kok's office. No charges were laid against Kok. - Mkini
